Grant McGrath

Abstract Painting

Grant McGrath is a visual artist based in Brooklyn, NYC. He is known for his explosive abstract paintings blending geometric and organic elements in acrylic, graphite and charcoal. The engineered and drafting techniques prevalent in his work are inspired by architectural design drawings and blueprints.

Grant is an art director for creative agencies. Taking a wide inspiration from film, industrial design, and fashion photography, he integrates those influences in his studio practice. Grant studied Art Studio at University of California, Davis and has continued his art education at Pratt, FIT and the Art Students League of New York.

“In my work, I always approached the canvas with a loose plan; maybe just the seed of a composition, layout, or curiosity of how a certain color mixture can be built. From that curiosity comes the challenge of building a world for it to exist in. I enjoy the battle and rush of discovery, letting the composition organically shift and evolve with each brush stroke. I use drafting techniques and tools to achieve the machine-like geometric structures, while simultaneously using forceful and unrestrained strokes with the brush, graphite stick and scraper in direct opposition to the exact lines.” Grant McGrath.
