Athena Anastasiou

Athena's statement

I am exploring my own personal mythology that speaks about identity and the core concerns of human existence. Some of the questions I ask through my work are, where do we come from, why is our planet and

wellbeing so out of balance? Defaulting to fear and frustration rather than love and creation and how it is our responsibility individually to shift that. The aesthetic framework that I use is one of mythology; portraying a feeling of magic, illustrating a life lesson and sometimes featuring mystical creatures. I like to add a sense of lightheartedness using almost child-like expression, as if they are large scale sketches. Through layers of colour,

texture and juxtaposition of mythological drawings I aim to provoke a freedom from the left brain thinking to obtain a connection to nature and intuition through an open mind.

Athena is a London art scholar and post graduate from Central St Martins, and is best known for her vibrant and eclectic large scale paintings. She is currently represented by Saatchi Art, New Blood Art, 508 Gallery, Amar Gallery (Curated), Blank White Space, Asylum Artist Management, and Fleek Gallery.

To date, she has acquired three solo shows and exhibited in numerous group shows around London, Portugal and Morocco. She is also a keen advocate for the emerging art scene in London, founding a pop up Art Gallery and Collective called “Meet The Artists” in 2015 that has represented over 100 emerging artists from London. Athena is now living in New York where she is deepening her art practice and creating new work for her next solo show. She is exploring her own personal mythology through colour, language and expression and her interests lie in promoting the raise of consciousness through art.

100 Voices, 100 Artists on Saatchi Art Blog

"At the core of New York based artist Athena Anastasiou’s bold and expressive works lay questions about the human existence and identity. Her visual narrative derives from personal experiences, conversations, and books on the quantum field and the power of thought and intention. Athena’s interest in Renaissance mythological paintings can be clearly seen throughout her art, in which she often reacts and reinterprets classical scenes."
